Carpets are a great option for flooring within the home, as they keep the house warmer, and feel soft and comfortable beneath your feet. Not to mention that they can make a room look instantly more inviting and cozy!

However, like all other floorings, carpets need to be cleaned. And carpets, in particular, actually need to be cleaned pretty regularly. This is because dirt, debris, and dust can easily become trapped in the fibers of the carpet, and can therefore build up quite fast. So in order to keep it clean, you need to put in that weekly maintenance effort.

Usually, people will clean their carpets by using a vacuum cleaner, as it’s fast, easy, and convenient. Plus, vacuum cleaners are great at cleaning carpets, especially those that have a specific carpet setting!

But…what if you don’t have a vacuum cleaner? Maybe you haven’t bought one yet, or you have one but it’s broken, or you simply don’t want to use one for any reason. Are there any other ways to clean the carpet efficiently? How do you clean a carpet without a vacuum?

There are actually a few ways you can go about it, and our commercial cleaners are going to tell you all about them. So let’s get right into it!

Methods For Cleaning Your Carpet Without A Vacuum

As we mentioned, there are a few different ways in which you can clean your carpet without having to use a vacuum cleaner. Some are more effective than others, and some are better suited to certain types of cleaning or carpets than others too.

Basically, you should choose the right method for you, based on how the carpet is dirty, and what the carpet is like. As well as your preference, of course!

But without further ado, here are some popular and common ways of cleaning a carpet, without the vacuum:

Using A Broom

Using a simple broom is the oldest trick in the book, and what everybody did before new items and methods were invented.

It’s not the most effective way of cleaning a carpet, as carpets can’t really be swept by a broom all the way through, so you won’t get all the dirt out.

But it can be a good way of getting most of the visible dirt and debris out of the carpet if you need a quick fix.

If you are going to use a broom, however, we recommend using one with natural stiff bristles, as long as possible, so that it actually does remove some of the dirt.

You will then want to perform short and brisk sweeps of the broom, in a straight line, to slowly lift and push the dirt out, before you collect it into a dustpan.

Using A Carpet Sweeper

The carpet sweeper is a weird mixed alternative to both the sweeping broom and the vacuum, and it’s something that can work really well for cleaning carpets on a regular basis.

Basically, it’s a mechanical device with rollers and brushes on the base that can be rolled across the carpet. And as it rotates, the brushes capture the dirt and store it, and at the end, you empty it into the trash. Simple!

The best part about the carpet sweeper is that it doesn’t require any electricity, but also it’s pretty low-effort to use. Plus, it’s completely silent, so it’s great for those that have young children or pets that get anxious about the sound of a vacuum.

And of course, as a carpet sweeper is designed for carpets, it is guaranteed to be effective. The only exception would be thicker carpets with deeper fibers, as the carpet sweeper might not be able to get to the bottom.

That being said, there are many different designs and models of carpet sweepers, so you are bound to find something that works for your specific carpet!

With Packaging Tape

Packaging tape is designed for packaging, so you might be wondering what the hell it’s doing on this list, but hear us out.

You can use pieces of packaging tape to remove hairs and other pieces of dirt that are hard to remove from the carpet, by simply pressing the packaging tape down onto the fibers of the carpet, and lifting it up.

If you press hard enough, the hairs and similar pieces of dirt will stick to the tape, since it’s adhesive, and will be lifted out of the carpet, leaving it clean.

The downside to this method is pretty obvious: it’s going to take forever. It means going around the carpet, manually pressing pieces of packaging tape to it, and lifting the dirt up.

So if anything, we’d say that this method is good for removing hair or dirt from specific sections of a carpet, when other methods have failed to clean it properly.

We wouldn’t recommend it as a primary method to use regularly, because it would be an absolute nightmare and a waste of both time and effort.

Washing The Carpet

If you need to deep clean a carpet, a vacuum isn’t the way to go anyway, so what you should do instead is wash it. And we mean properly wash it, so that all signs of dirt are removed, and it’s left feeling fresh and almost new.

There are many ways to go about this method, and many products that you can buy that are specific for washing carpets on a deeper level. The aim is simple: remove the dirt, kill off bacteria and similar, and leave the carpet feeling fresh.

We would recommend starting off by using warm soapy water (ideally a solution with a product specific to washing carpets) and a sponge.

And then you just…scrub the carpet clean. It’s a lot of effort, but the results are long-lasting, and not really a part of weekly maintenance.

Friendly reminder, however, that you should always check the specifications of your specific carpet, to make sure that the products you are using won’t harm the fibers!

There are many more methods of cleaning the carpet without a vacuum cleaner, but these are the most popular and common. At the end of the day, any method is valid as long as it manages to remove the dirt from the carpet, so just do what feels right, and what you are able to!
