How Do I Remove Brown Stains From Toilet Bowl?

There are lots of different methods that you can use to remove brown stains from within your toilet. Ultimately, all of these methods will include the use of a toilet brush, so it is important to have that ready.

In this guide, we, CLEANA commercial cleaning company will be taking a look at how to remove these stains from your toilet using simple household items, including a method that uses distilled white vinegar, and a method that uses coca-cola.

But first, let’s take a look at what causes these stains to occur.

What Causes Brown Stains In The Bottom Of Toilet Bowl?

Throughout your toilet’s lifetime, you will encounter lots of different stains. Of all the items in your house, the toilet is the one that is most likely to become dirty, for obvious reasons.

But, most of the time, the obvious stains can be easily removed with your toilet brush. It is the tougher, brown stains at the bottom of the toilet bowl that is harder to remove. So, what causes these stains?

As we said earlier, the thing that is responsible for these dark stains is actually the water at the bottom of the toilet bowl.

These stains form because the water that is found in this area is actually hard water. Hard water doesn’t mean that the water itself is hard, instead, it means that the water has a high concentration of minerals.

It is these minerals that cause damage.

Most of the time, the minerals that are most responsible for creating brown stains are manganese and iron compounds.

Unfortunately, both of these minerals are typically found in high amounts in hard water. These minerals are both metal minerals, and so they cause rust. This rust only worsens the stains in the bottom of your toilet bowl.

With regular toilet stains, you will find that they can be easily removed. But hard water stains are incredibly tough and impossible to remove with just your toilet brush.

So, how can you remove these stains? Let’s take a look at two of the best methods.

Method 1 – Distilled White Vinegar

What You Need

  • Distilled White Vinegar.
  • Toilet Brush.
  • Microfiber Cloth.

What to Do

Removing these stains with distilled white vinegar is actually one of the easiest methods to follow. To do this, all you need is to measure half a cup of white vinegar and then pour that into your toilet.

You should leave the vinegar to soak in the toilet bowl for a couple of minutes, so in the meantime, you can clean the rim of the toilet.

To clean the rim of the toilet, simply spray the white vinegar around the rim. Leave it to sit there for a minute, and then wipe around the rim with a microfiber cloth.

This will remove any stubborn stains around the top of your toilet that might have been caused by water splashing.

Remember, when you flush your toilet, water runs from the top of the toilet bowl down, so these areas might also be affected by stains.

Once you have done that, you can move back to the bottom of the toilet bowl. Take your toilet brush and scrub around the bottom of the toilet bowl, like you would when cleaning the toilet regularly.

The white vinegar should have loosened the stains, allowing them to be easily scrubbed away, leaving your toilet as good as new.

Method 2 – Coca-Cola

What You Need

  • Coca-Cola.
  • Time.

What To Do

Cleaning your toilet stains with distilled white vinegar was easy, but using coca-cola is even easier. However, for this method, you will need plenty of time.

So, it isn’t the best choice if you are looking for a quick fix before friends come around. In order to use this method, you will need to be able to leave your toilet overnight without using it.

So, it will require some careful planning. Especially if you have a large family.

But, in terms of method, this option is by far the easiest. To clean your toilet using coca-cola, all you need is a can of full-fat coca-cola.

Open the can, and pour the coca-cola around the rim of your toilet (in the same way that you would apply a regular toilet cleaner).

However, instead of leaving the product to work for around 15 minutes, you should then close the lid to the toilet, and leave the coca-cola in it overnight.

When you return in the morning, you will find that the fizzy pop has migrated to the bottom of the toilet bowl. All there is left to do is flush the toilet.

Once the flush has done its job, you should observe that the dark stains at the bottom of the toilet have gone. Overnight the coca-cola will have penetrated the stains and broken them down, leaving you with a lovely, clean toilet.
